Parents and Friends
The best way of reducing the number of children and youth on the streets is by means of prevention. The social risks, situations and problems that surround them can make youth chose to live on the streets, such as recurrent family conflicts, poor performance in school, absence of any adult authority figures, work and/or belong to groups who are already in the street – bands or gangs, substance abuse, places with little or no places for family coexistence.
SOS in the streets
There is no clear definition of the profile of street children and youths, which leads to certain confusion as to which is the street population and those that are just working on the streets. The fact of having to occupy the street as their means of subsistence and social interaction does not mean that both populations have similar needs. The few official programs continue without recognizing that both have distinctive features and as a result have different needs.
The Transition House
The transitory house facilitates the personal development of the children by means of the formation of habits, values and capacitating. Furthermore the giving them adequate treatment in the event of them suffering from an addiction , which gives them the opportunity to acquire habits to begin an independent life, characterized by having a steady job, without consuming substances and no longer living on the streets.
Producing together
The workshops are a fundamental part of the educational process of El Caracol are a response to the necessity of a space for capacitating, where the youths that enter the Transition house acquire knowledge , values and habits for a working life. This is a lab oral exercise in a low-tech environment, which has a timetable and a learning area, which facilitates the integration into the work force.
